Explora’t – a breast cancer awareness workshop for people with intellectual disabilities

UOMI Cancer Center and Ginnova, the oncology and gynecology units of Clínica Mi Tres Torres, together with the Fundación Alex and Aura Fundació, offer a workshop for people with intellectual disabilities on the importance of self-awareness and self-exploration for the prevention of breast cancer.

October 19 is World Breast Cancer Day, and it is becoming increasingly important that comprehensive information about this disease and the prevention tools at our disposal is made fully available and accessible to the whole of society.

For this purpose, UOMI Cancer Center and Ginnova, the oncology and gynecology units of Clínica Mi Tres Torres, the Fundación Alex and Aura Fundació have joined forces to transmit this knowledge to a group of 20 young women with different degrees of intellectual disability, in a friendly and informal workshop format over breakfast.

The attendees, users of the Aura Fundació with intellectual disabilities and staff from the foundation, were able to ask questions and learn from Dr. Marta Suárez, an oncologist specializing in breast pathologies at the UOMi Cancer Center, and Dr. Cristina Mariné, a gynecologist at Ginnova at Clínica Mi Tres Torres.

The aim of the session was to explain, in the clearest way possible, what breast cancer is; the benefits of knowing one’s own body in order to learn to interpret its signals; the importance of prevention and follow-up reviews, and the keys ensuring healthy lifestyle habits. After a brief break for breakfast, the participants had the opportunity to express their doubts and share their concerns with Dr. Suárez and Dr. Mariné.
