UOMI and the Ricky Rubio Foundation hold the first Congress of Oncology Clinical Trials in Barcelona
Last Friday, May 20, we enjoyed a very special day with Dr. Viteri and the team from the Oncology Service at Clínicas Mi. The Ricky Rubio Foundation, in collaboration with the UOMI Cancer Center, held CECOB – the first Congress of Clinical Trials in Oncology in Barcelona – at CaixaForum, coinciding with World Clinical Trials Day.
Dr. Viteri was in charge of opening the congress, which was attended by more than 200 experts, to lead reflection on the professionalization of clinical research in this specialty. The event also provided a forum for the analysis of technological innovations and patient involvement in clinical trials, which are crucial in the search for and application of more effective treatments against lung cancer. At 11 a.m., a press conference was held in which the NBA star Ricky Rubio and Dr. Santiago Viteri explained the details, scope and content of this novel initiative to advance cancer research.
A round table was also held in which Gabriel Masfurroll, President of Clínicas Mi, Georgina Simó (Clínica Mi Tres Torres), Bernard Gaspar (AECaP), Joan Font, Sagrario Ortega, Carles Heredia and Dr. Sonia Baulies (Hospital Universitari Dexeus) accompanied Ricky Rubio and Dr. Viteri in reflecting on the Voice of the Patient. Dr. Carlos Cabrera, from the UOMI Cancer Center, put the finishing touch to the congress with his closing address.
Work sessions, presentations and round tables were organized into four thematic blocks: technical and technological aspects, the patient as a key figure, ethical and regulatory aspects, and the future of clinical trials. The experts in attendance represented a wide range of profiles from a diverse international community of professionals: researchers, clinicians, pharmacists, and nursing specialists, as well as participating patients.
Dr. Manel Esteller, a renowned researcher in biomedicine applied to cancer therapies at the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute; Christian Rolfo, liquid biopsy expert at Mount Sinai; Keunchil Park, research specialist at Samsung Medical Center; Julián R. Molina, an exponent of personalized medicine at Mayo Clinic, and Elena Garralda, a specialist in new clinical trial models at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Onchology, are some of the outstanding specialists who attended CECOB 2022. The event was an unquestionable success, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who made it possible. Congratulations!
